Placer County is a county located in the Sierra Nevada of the U.S. state of California, in what is known as the Gold Country. It stretches from the suburbs of Sacramento to Lake Tahoe and the Nevada border. Because of the expansion of the Sacramento metropolitan area, Placer County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state. As of 2004, the population had grown to 307,004. Winters are generally cool to relatively dry or cool to rainy at the lower elevations with occasional, heavy snowfalls occurring at elevations above five thousand feet. Snowfall is extremely rare at elevations below 1,000 feet but trace amounts to a few inches have been documented over the years. Dense valley fog also known as tule fog can occur in areas closer to the valley floor between the months of December to mid February which can make driving hazardous. Daytime winter temperatures for the lower elevations typically range from the mid 40's to upper 50's with overnight lows ranging from just above freezing to the mid 40's. Extreme cold snaps are rare and short lived, but overnight temperatures can dip from the mid to upper 20's during this season. Higher elevations above five thousand feet typically have daytime temperatures from the low 30's to low 50's with overnight lows averaging in the low teens to mid 20's. The summer climate for the valley is dry, hot, and desert like between the months of mid June through late September.
